I absolutely love growing beans; they’re super easy to grow, massively productive in only a small space and most importantly extremely tasty and versatile to cook with. In the few years that I’ve had an allotment, my love of growing beans has ballooned from sowing a few rows of the usual staples to devoting a massive chunk of my plot to growing over twenty different varieties of beans!
This week, I made a start on sowing some of my dwarf and climbing beans with the aim of planting them out at the end of the month at the allotment. When it comes round to harvesting, I have a habit of forgetting which varieties I’ve grown so I’ve been careful to photo and label all of the beans that I’ve sown so far. I’ve never had much luck with growing Yardlong or Chinese Long beans before as they require a long and warm Summer which we just don’t get in the UK! Although this year, I’m trying the variety ‘Chinese Green Noodle’ which is supposedly an early variety and more suited to a cooler climate.
Elsewhere on the allotment, all of my potatoes have now been planted and the first early varieties ‘Swift’ and ‘Rocket’ have triumphantly emerged from the soil. All of my broad beans and peas have also survived the recent cold weather and are starting to put on some healthy growth.
As is it still too cold to plant tender crops outside, the greenhouse is absolutly bursting with seedlings and young plants at the moment. To give you some idea, here’s a quick glimpse inside the greenhouse from last week.
As I want to keep a record of how my allotment evolves over the growing year, I’m going to film a short video tour each month. This first one is below but I’m afraid you’ll have to excuse the horror movie shaky camera style!
